Flairtending Lesson #66: Double Over Shoulder Into Stall

We’re finally starting to get into some more impressive moves on our journey into flairtending. The Double Over the Shoulder into a Stall is a clean, impressive, exhibition flair move that is the perfect addition to our previous moves.

First of all, make sure you are already comfortable with the Double Over the Shoulder as well as the Stall and Flip Stall – this move is really just a combination of those flair moves. Probably doesn’t hurt to make sure you’re good with the previous move, the Double Over Shoulder into Tin, either, since this is just a slight variation of that move.

I’ll say it again: practice those previous moves until you can get them 90% of the time. If you do that, this move should just take a little bit of practice. If you don’t know those moves, you’ll be driving yourself nuts.

Tips for landing the end of this move, the stall:

1) Anticipate the stall. Don’t just put your hand out there and try to “dead hand” the catch. You need to meet the bottle with the back of your hand before it is completely vertical.

2) Practice with a little bit of liquid in the bottle. Sometimes moves – especially stalls – can be easier to land with some liquid in the bottle. Of course, this is exhibition flairtending, so don’t use more than a 1/4 full bottle or you will spill. Try starting with 2 oz., then add 2 oz. more, and keep adding until you spray everywhere. That’s when you know you’ve gone 2 oz too far.

3) If landing the stall is really frustrating you, try practicing with different bottles. I’ve found that square bottles (like Jack Daniels or Jim Beam) tend to be easier to stall, particularly for this Over the Shoulder move.

4) If you find yourself feeling like the bottle comes around too quick to stall, set the bottle down and try mimicking the motion with your hand. Moves where one hand is doing two things (throwing then stalling) can clog up our minds; make it easier on yourself by getting comfortable with the movement your hand will make.
