Flair Bartending Lesson #45: Beer Bottle Pop Open

Happy New Year’s everybody! This ain’t exactly opening a bottle of champagne with a saber, but it’s as close as we’re going to get. This is some fun, working prop flair that is really tricky at first but has a nice effect and is worth practicing until you can get it down.

Tips to successfully learning the beer bottle pop open:

1) Use the proper tools. A basic speed opener works best.

2) This move is easier to do with certain beer bottles. Find which ones work best for you. For me, it’s any type of Budweiser or Bud Light bottle – the neck is long enough and doesn’t have the lip that Miller Lite bottles have. Also, Guinness bottles are awesome for this – they make a really loud pop when you do this move right.

3) On either side of the bottle, bring your speed opener straight up in a swift motion. This is the tricky part that will come with time and practice. You will fail many times before you finally succeed. Don’t let it drive you nuts, just keep at it. I recommend getting a case or two of beer and trying this at home a lot with some friends.

4) Make sure you are not serving your guests a broken bottle. When not done properly, this move can actually break the top of the bottle while popping the cap off. Keep your patrons’ safety in mind and be sure to check each bottle before you serve it.

5) Be aware of where your bottle cap is going to fly off. Don’t hit your guests with it. Seriously.
