Flair Bartending Lesson #41: Glassware Lift-Off
This is a great Prop Flair move that I use just about anytime I need to make two lowball cocktails. Make sure you are already comfortable with the Flat Behind the Back.
1) You will need two stackable glasses for this flair move. If you work in bar that has stacks of lowball glasses next to the ice bin, start by grabbing one with another on top of it.
2) Hold the two glasses (upside down) out to the side with your arm extended. Your hand should be holding the mouth of the bottom glass.
3) Keeping your hold on the bottom glass, lift your arm up and bend your elbow back towards you. The toss should make a nice arc through the air and land in your other hand right by your tailbone, much like in the Flat Behind the Back.
4) If you’re having problems with the toss, set down one of the glasses and just practice the throw/catch with one.
5) Be sure to catch the glass evenly in your palm – not with your fingers inside the glass.
6) It takes a little bit of practice, but I’ve found it better to do this move by flicking the top glass so that it spins away from me one rotation as it travels behind my back. To do this, I begin the toss, then at the split second that the top glass is lifting off the glass that I am holding, I flick my wrist towards me quickly, adding a spin to the top glass. For me, I’ve found this is more difficult at first but ultimately more consistent in getting the catch to land in my palm.
7) Be sure to watch the glass all the way into your hand. Also, make the catch easier by already having your hand behind your back by your tailbone, palm open, ready to catch before you even throw.
