Flair Lesson #11: Bounce Cut

Great functional flair bartending move! This works well as another finish to our Change Grip Around the Head, but is great for a number of other sequences as well.

To practice this, start with a bottle that is completely full of water. Put a pour spout on it and grab a tin. I really prefer the Spill Stop 285-50 Metal Pour Spouts, but use whatever you have available to you or the pour spouts you use at work. It helps to keep a dry towel nearby, too. Start by leaving the tin on the bar top and just practice the “bounce” part of the move. What you’re trying to do is get comfortable with the motion and get familiar with how much time the bounce buys you when it cuts off the pour.

Once you feel like you’re comfortable with the bottle part of this move, pick up the tin and practice the timing of rotating the tin forward. Practice this one A LOT at home before trying this at work. You should be able to get this 100% without spilling a drop before you try it at work.

Once you are comfortable doing this move on its own, try using it as a finish to other moves, especially to any of the Change Grip Around the Head sequence of moves.

In this video, the cocktail shaker I am using is called a “Powder Coated Neon 28 oz Cocktail Shaker” or a “Candy Coated” shaker. They act and feel exactly like the usual 28oz. shaker tin that we have been using for all of the previous lessons, but they are a little more pretty to look at. Not necessary for when you are starting out, but eventually you might want to have a set of flashy tins. The colors that are available change from time to time, but you can view what’s available in Powder Coated Neon Shakers or Candy Coated Shakers.
