Flair Lesson #10: Tin Double Same Hand Grab Around Head

I LOVE THIS MOVE!! This can be a tricky one when you’re getting started, but once you get it down you’ll know what I’m talking about. Part of what I love about this working flair move is that it only involves a tin – no need to worry about spilling or breaking a bottle! Tips to getting this move down:

1) Start with a proper grip on the tin: thumb and middle finger on opposite sides on the mouth of the tin.

2) Practice the throw first. Use your other hand to practice the catch while you get comfortable and consistent with throwing a double spin, focusing on being able to catch it right next to your ear.

3) The throw shouldn’t involve your whole arm, but rather focus on two things: 1) bending your elbow at the same time as you 2) flick your wrist to spin the tin.

4) Don’t blind yourself! Move your hand around your head in order to catch the tin. Don’t move your arm in front of your eyes or you will lose track of the tin.

5) Your catching hand should have an open palm with your thumb pointing down. Don’t worry about grabbing the tin as much as having your hand in the right spot. Physiologically, if the tin hits your palm, your fingers should reflexively wrap around it. As jugglers say: “Get a good throw and the catch will happen.”

6) Keep your eyes on the tin. Watch it all the way through.

7) As with all of our flair bartending moves, especially when we are starting out: practice with both hands!!

In this video, the cocktail shaker I am using is called a “Powder Coated Neon 28 oz Cocktail Shaker” or a “Candy Coated” shaker. They act and feel exactly like the usual 28oz. shaker tin that we have been using for all of the previous lessons, but they are a little more pretty to look at. Not necessary for when you are starting out, but eventually you might want to have a set of flashy tins. The colors that are available change from time to time, but you can view what’s available in Powder Coated Neon Shakers.
