Flair Bartending Lesson 43: Jager Bomb Domino
Bomb shots have become really popular in the last few years and this a great way to pour one with flair. The Jager Bomb Domino, or Bomb Shot Domino, is an eye-catching, fun move that guests really love. It’s what I call a “low-skill, high-payoff” move – meaning that it is a pretty simple move to learn but is very visually impressive. This move is great for pouring any number of bomb shots: jager bombs, cherry bombs, X-bombs, Vegas bombs, etc.
Make sure you have proper glassware and can perform this trick safely and without breaking glassware. Make sure your lowball glasses are a bit thick; fragile once can break during the domino. Also, you can lessen the chance of breaking any glassware by making sure the lowballs are filled up to a proper height with energy drink.
In theory, you should be able to do as many of these in a row as you like. For practice sake, we’re going to learn how to do four. The mechanics are the same for when you want to do more.
Start by lining up four lowball glasses in a line on your bar. The lip or top of each glass should be touching the ones next to it. Even when you’re using identical glassware, you’ll find when you look closely there are small differences in the height of each glass. In this case, even an 1/8 of an inch can mess things up. If you find the tops of the glasses are uneven, try rearranging the order of the glasses or try spinning them slightly – one side of the glass might be a tiny bit taller than the other.
Fill up your glasses with Red Bull or whatever energy drink or other liquid you’re using for the base of the shot. Make sure you are filling the glasses with enough liquid to cushion the shot glass as it falls into the glass. I’ve found that – depending on your glassware – one Red Bull can usually be split between 3 or 4 glasses. I would never try to split it between more than 4.
Next, we are going to balance our shot glasses on the lip between each lowball. One at a time, place each shot glass so that it is balanced on top of each glass. If you’re having a hard time keeping it from falling, trying rotating the lowball glass 90 degrees or try pulling the lowballs very slightly away from each other.
Once all of the shot glasses are balanced on top of the lowballs, we need to fill them up. Be extra careful not to touch or bump any of the shot glasses – if you do, they’re all gonna fall before you’re ready and it’ll be too late to start over. When you’re ready for the domino effect, pour one more shot into a shot glass, set it on the edge of the first glass and gently tip it in, knocking down all of the other shot glasses one at a time.
Before actually serving this round of shots to your guests, be sure to give a proper inspection of the shots and make sure that none of them are broken. Guest safety is always top priority!
