Exhibition Flair Bartending Lesson #72: Over Shoulder Swipe Thru

This week’s move is good, simple, exhibition flair that will be very useful for a number of moves down the road. It’s essentially just an exhibition flair version of the basic Swipe Thru or the Circle Swipe Thru – so for starters, make sure you’re good with those moves. Again, exhibition flair means using a bottle that is less than 25% full. Use a bottle that’s too full and you’ll know it pretty quickly (you’ll need a towel to clean up the mess.)

So, once you’ve got those moves already under control, let’s move on to the Over Shoulder Swipe Thru:

1) Start with just a quick snap of the wrist, getting a swift single rotation of the bottle, and catch it upside down by the neck.

2) Be sure to follow through with the momentum of the bottle in a circular motion, bringing the bottle down while you turn your wrist so the pour spout is angled up. If you’re not doing this properly you’ll know pretty quickly (again, you’ll be spilling or pouring everywhere.)

3) It helps add to the fluidity of the move if you step your right foot forward (if you’re right handed) and turn your waist and shoulder into the move. Remember when you’re flairing: your feet ain’t glued to the ground. Use them to move around.

4) To complete the motion of this hand/bottle, it’s essentially the same throw as the Double Over the Shoulder, except the throw is a little lower, quicker, and just a single rotation.

5) The tin just rolls of the fingers, completing a simple circle, and is caught with the same hand that threw it.

6) Rinse. Repeat.
