Flair Bartending Lesson #39: Garnish Behind the Back

This is a simple Prop Flair move that is a fun way to garnish someone’s drink with a lime, lemon, cherry, or other garnish. Be sure to practice this one at home until you can do it without spilling the drink.

My tips for learning the Garnish Behind the Back:

1) Practice the throw first. As jugglers say: “Get a good throws and the catches will come.” Using a slice of fruit, an ice cube, or any other small object, practice throwing the fruit behind your back and up over your opposite shoulder. The throw should be very similar to the throw from Lesson #30: Double Flat Back to Front. Practice the throw until you can consistently get it to land in your left hand without moving it.

2) Put an empty glass in your left hand. Repeat step #1 until you can land the throw into the glass, moving your left hand as little as possible.

3) Fill up the glass with ice and water. Repeat step #1 until you can consistently catch the garnish in the glass without spilling. Note that you may get a little splash out of the glass when the condiment lands in it. To minimize this, I sometimes only fill the drink halfway, perform this move, then top off the drink before serving.
